High school graduation

I was born in Lynwood, California, on March 26, 1965. I grew up in the Stockton area with my five siblings.

When I was nine years old, Governor Ronald Reagan appointed my dad, Norman D. Shumway, to the San Juaquin County Board of Supervisors. Four years later, my dad beat John McFall in the 1978 general election to represent California's 14th congressional district in the US House of Representatives. My family moved to Springfield, Virginia.
I received my Eagle Scout award in Virginia, and I graduated from West Springfield High School in 1983.

From 1984-1986, I served as a Spanish-speaking missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in downtown and South-Central Los Angeles, California. It was a life-changing experience for me. To this day, I speak fluent Spanish and continue to have a deep love for the Latino people living here in the US.

Upon completing my missionary service, I returned to Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, to finish my undergraduate studies. During that time, I met the love of my life, the former Ann Hogan, of Bend, Oregon. We were married in the LDS temple in Logan, Utah, on May 13, 1988.

After graduating, I moved with Ann and my kids to Phoenix, Arizona, where I worked for American Fence Corporation for a couple of years before returning to BYU to pursue my master's degree in business.

I received my MBA from BYU's Marriott School of Management in 1993, after which I returned to American Fence in Phoenix. Five years later, I partnered with Renee Cano to form Razor Wire International, LLC, a manufacturing business which we ran jointly until I left, in 2005, to form a media production company called Elegy Media. While still working at Razor Wire, my growing family and I moved to Soda Springs, Idaho, where we lived in the Bailey Creek area on 3.3 acres of land, with two streams on the property. I served on the local school board for four years.

In 2006, my now large family and I moved to Rexburg, where we continue to live. I worked as a shift supervisor at Dickinson Frozen Foods (formerly NorSun), and then I launched my own restaurant, Teriyaki Express. I was an implementation specialist at PolicyTech (later NAVEX Global), and then I shot and edited videos at Perkley, LLC. I worked as a leasing manager for a couple of property management companies who rented to BYU-Idaho students, and then, in 2019, I joined the Marketing and Public Relations department at Madison Memorial Hospital (later Madisonhealth).

Eight of my nine children graduated from Madison High School, in Rexburg. My youngest, Henry, is in his senior year and will graduate in 2026.

I have nine grandchildren (plus two more on the way - yay!), and my favorite hobbies include making (and eating) sushi, solving the New York Times crossword puzzle along with the other NYT word puzzles (Wordle, Connections, Spelling Bee, Strands, and the Mini), working on my backyard koi pond project, and teaching a group of very smart seven-year-olds on Sunday mornings in my local ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Some might claim that my political experience amounts to next to nothing, which is true. I am therefore, according to them, unqualified to serve in Congress. In fact, however, I count my entire 60 years on this planet as contributing to the vast wealth of experience which I now possess, which is experience of the very best kind - working in multiple jobs, raising children, going to church, enjoying the beautiful earth, and interacting with other human beings in every conceivable capacity. Nothing could've prepared me better for a few years of service in our nation's capital.

I'm ready to go there now, to do my part. And for that, I ask for your support.

Thank you.
